Rwanda peacekeepers (Rwanbatt-6) serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were decorated by UNMISS Force Commander, at a UN Medal parade award ceremony in Juba, the Capital of South Sudan on 2 October 2015.

UNMISS Force Commander Lt Gen Yohannes Gebremeskel Tesfamariam presented and decorated medals to Rwanda peacekeepers for having served professionally the UNMISS.
In his remarks, he thanked the Government of Rwanda for contributing troops to UNMISS. He commended the peacekeepers for their professionalism, commitment and dedication shown beyond the call of duty. ‘‘You have served with discipline and diligence in support of the mission to achieve its mandate’’ he said. “Put on these medals as proud and worthy ambassadors of your country and of the United Nations” he awarded.
Lt Gen Yohannes particularly recognized the contribution of 20 female members of Rwanbatt-6 in UNMISS. “Your expertise is impressively wide-ranging and includes all tasks requested within a functional infantry Unit” he said.

Rwanda Contingent Commander Lt Col John Muvunyi said that Rwanbatt-6 supported UNMISS mandate by conducting security patrols to protect civilians in area of operation. The peacekeepers also conducted CIMIC activities such as construction of South Sudan National Police ablutions at Gudele Payam and Rajaf Farming to restore normalcy and gain confidence of local population.
Rwanbatt-6 protected civilians in the IDPs camps from threats of the civil war, containing inter-communal clashes inside IDPs and providing force protection to integrated patrols and humanitarian partners.
Lt Col John Muvunyi thanked the peacekeepers and said that "the decoration demonstrated appreciation for the work well done, and an opportunity to do more”. He appreciated the cordial atmosphere and friendly working relationship Rwanbatt-6 enjoyed with Senior Mission leadership, Force HQS and Sector South HQS.
The colorful event was marked by an exciting cultural show by the Rwandan battalion cultural troupe .The ceremony was attended by Senior UNMISS Civilian, Military and Police Officials.
