Rwanda Peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) joined the rest of the world to celebrate the World Aids Day Commemoration at the UNMISS Camp known as Plan B, in Juba South Sudan on 27 November 2015.
For this celebration, the UNMISS Force Head Quarters organised competition in different games between UNMISS contingents that took place at Juba Tomping compound (Bangladesh play ground). Rwanda Defence Forces battalion (Rwanbatt 6) at the final match, Rwandan Peacekeepers teams emerged the best winner after beating UNMISS Civilian Staff team two goals to one (2-1) in Foot ball.
In another discipline competition known as Tug of Peace or Tug of War that marked the WAD, Rwanda Aviation Unit 4 also beat Bangladesh engineers. The winners of WAD Commemoration Events, both Rwandan teams (Rwanbatt-6 and Rwanda Aviation Unit 4 (RAU4) were awarded WAD trophies in UNMISS.
In her remarks, the Special Representative of UN Secretary General (SRSG) Madam Ellen Margret Loej who was also the Guest of Honor, delivered a message of solidarity to UNMISS Community. “As we are UN family that commemorates the World Aids Day, we have to protect ourselves and need to pay attention while fighting HIV all over the world. I congratulate and wish the best to the winners teams of Rwanda”, she concluded.
UNMISS Force Commander Lt-Gen Yohannes Gebremeskel Tesfamariam, who flagged off game of Tug of Peace, congratulated RAU-4 and also Rwanbatt-6 for having won the games. He commended their discipline during the competitions.
During the commemoration attended by UNMISS Officials, the UNMISS Chief of HIV/AIDS Department Ms. Renate Ehmer briefed the participants about World Aids Day Commemoration and lighted the light of hope.
