Rwanda Peacekeepers commemorate 23rd anniversary of Genocide against the Tutsi

South Sudan, Juba, 7 April 2017


Rwanda peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS)  together with the Rwandan Community in the Republic of South Sudan were on 7th April 2017 joined by friends and UN officials to mark the 23rd commemoration of Genocide against the Tutsi.

The Commemoration that started with a walk to remember was held at Juba Tomping Camp. The Deputy Special Representative of UN Secretary General in South Sudan, Mr. Mustapha Soumare, the Deputy UNMISS Force Commander, Maj Gen Yang Chaoying and Gen Matier Deng representing South Sudan Authorities where among dignitaries present at the Ceremony.

In his remarks, the Deputy Special Representative of UN Secretary General, Mr. Mustapha Soumare comforted Rwandans who lost their beloved ones during the Genocide against the Tutsi. He noted that the 1994 Genocide during which  over a million of people were killed is a sign of failure of the International Community tha should never be allowed to happen again. Mr Soumare hailed Rwanda's success in unifying and reconciling citizens as well as rebuilding the country from ashes that the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi left behind.

On behalf of Rwanda Ambassador to Uganda and South Sudan, the Defence Attaché, Lt Col James Burabyo, recalled that the commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi is annually held not only to honour the victims, but also to keep on fighting genocide denial and ideology. He called upon the international community to join Rwandans in this endeavor.
