Rwanda peacekeepers (RWANBATT49) serving under African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation (UNAMID) in North Darfur, Sudan on 12 September 2017 were decorated with UN medals in recognition of their contribution to maintaining peace and stability in Darfur. The medal decoration ceremony was held at Rwanbatt49 Headquarters in KABKABIYA, Northern Darfur in Sudan.
The medals award ceremony was presided over by Acting Force Commander on behalf of UNAMID Joint Special Representative.
In his remarks, the Guest of Honor Maj Gen Fida Hussain Maalik Acknowledged the Rwanbatt49’s immense contribution to the realisation of UNAMID’s mandate. He commended the high level of professionalism displayed by members of Rwanbatt49 since the beginning of their deployment in Mission area, in November 2016.
“I have closely observed the activities of all Battalions under UNAMID and I am proud to say that Rwanbatt49 has shined in their role as loyal, dedicated and committed Peacekeepers in the Sector North of the UNAMID Area of Operations”. Maj Gen Fida Hussain Maalik said.
He commended on cordial relationship established between the Rwanbatt49 and the people of Sudan during their stay, especially in areas of Humanitarian Assistance and Civil Military Cooperation activities where very soon UNAMID will hand over to local population the EL SIREAF Girl’s Secondary School constructed by RWANBATT49 as a Quick Impact Project (QIP) in EL SIREAF locality.
Acting Force Commander Maj Gen Fida Hussain Maalik on behalf of the JSR, thanked the Government of Rwanda for its significant contribution and sustained commitment to UN Peacekeeping operations. These efforts make Rwanda one of the top five troops/police contributing countries in the world.
In his remarks, the Rwanbatt49 Commanding Officer, Lt Col David Musirikare congratulated Rwanbatt49 Officers Men and women for their discipline and professionalism for the last ten months on duty.
“Today’s event marked another milestone in our lives as Peacekeepers. I am pleased to note that, this medal award will be regarded extraordinary as a motivation, which will contribute greatly in executing with renewed commitment to the protection of Civilians as well as discharging other duties as required by the UNAMID mandate” Lt col D. Musirikare concluded.
The ceremony was attended by other dignitaries including, Hon Commissioner Kabkabiya Dr Adam Mohammed Adam Saleh, a representative of 21Bde Comdr in Kabkabiya Maj Fatila Amani, Rwanda Contingent Commander Col S Ndamukunda UNAMID Deputy Sector North Commander Col A Gasana, among others.
