Italian Air Force Chief of Staff visits Rwanda

The Italian defence delegation led by Lt Gen Enzo Vecciarelli, the Italian Air Force Chief of Staff is visiting Rwanda from 25 to 27 July 2017.

The Italian delegation led by Air Force Chief of Staff held bilateral meeting with Hon Minister of Defence, Gen James Kabarebe, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Patrick Nyamvumba, Rwanda Air Force Chief of Staff, Brig Gen Charles Karamba and other Generals and Senior Officers from Rwanda Defence Force.

After the defence cooperation meeting held at RDF Headquarters, Brig Gen Ferdinand Safari, Director General at Ministry of Defence told reporters that the Italian Delegation visit to Rwanda is aimed at cementing the existing bilateral cooperation between Rwanda and Italy.

“We’ve got good cooperation in various aspects but we focus mainly in aviation and training. As you know, the Italy is advanced in aviation. We can learn a lot from them”, Gen Safari said before noting that the Italian delegation visit to Rwanda was preceded by the visit of Rwanda Air Force Chief of Staff to Italy last year, in May.

In the afternoon, the Italian Delegation visited Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre where they paid respect to the Victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi before touring different sections of the Memorial. After a guided tour to the Memorial, Gen Enzo Vecciarelli underlined that the purpose of visiting Rwanda was to strengthen the cooperation between Italy and Rwanda, especially between Rwanda and Italy Air Forces.

“I am visiting Rwanda because we are trying to increase the possibilities of cooperation between Italy and Rwanda, especially between the two Air Forces. But I couldn’t be here without paying visit and honour the Victims of the Genocide. The Genocide of Rwanda remains a lesson learnt for the people of the whole world… You should be here to understand better what happened and why to avoid this to happen again”, the Italian Air Force Chief of Staff said after noting in the Visitors book at Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre “deep sorrow, we feel we should let us be capable to build a better future”.

Gen Enzo Vecciarelli is accompanied by Brig Gen Francesco Presicce, Lt Col Francesco Sassara Deputy Defence Attache, 1st Lieutenant Tiziana Giannuzi and Sergeant Simone Savo.
