The final games of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Inter-force Sports Competition Edition 2018 were played today at Amahoro Stadium and Kigali Stadium, Nyamirambo. An exciting day that started at Amahoro Stadium with Volleyball, Basketball, Handball and Athletics were played from 9:00Hrs to 13:00 Hrs. Republican Guard(RG), Special Operation Forces (SOF) and General Headquarters (GHQ) emerged as winners in Volleyball, Handball and Basketball respectively.
In Athletics, GHQ players emerged the best in 400m and 5000m both for Men and Women categories. They were followed by Rwanda Air Force (RAF) and 3 Division players. Cpl Bizimana Musa from GHQ was the best athlete winning 400 m run with 51" 40 while Pte Niragire Vivine from GHQ emerged the best in Women with 1'7"02. Niragire was also the best at 5000m with 17'25"68. Pte Tuyishime Christophe from GHQ was the best at 5000m with 14'27"04 as results.
The Final games were graced by the Minister of Sports and Culture, Uwacu Julienne as the Guest of Honor who kicked off the final Football Match that opposed 1 Division to RG. It was an enduring and competitive match on both sides where fans chanted with high morale at Nyamirambo Stadium from 1530 -17300 Hrs. Military personnel as well as civilians turned in big numbers to watch this exciting match won by the RG Football Club.
Trophies and awards were handed over to the winners by the Army Chief of Staff Lt Gen Jacques Musemakweli on behalf of the RDF Chief of Defence Staff who congratulated all participants and organizers of the 2018 Inter-force competition. He underlined that the most important outcome is the tournament is gained “esprit de corps” and cohesion within the RDF. He maintained that there was no winner or loser in the RDF. “We are not aiming at winning trophies” rather fostering on esprit de corps and cohesion to achieve our common vision, we want to have one Force with one vision at all chain of command”, he said before revealing that all RDF services, different units and formations participated within the just concluded 2018 inter-force competition.
Another important and uniquely military sporting discipline that took place was the shooting competition that took place at Rwanda Military Academy Gako on 30 January 2018. In this field, the Special Operation Forces emerged as the overall winner among other RDF Formations that competed.
The sport events marked the culmination of the Inter-force Sports Competition Edition 2018 that started in the beginning of December last Year.
These games were also recognized at National Level during Heroism Football Tournament Finals marking the Celebrations of Heroes Day, at Amahoro Stadium on 1 February 2017. The sports event was attended by high authorities including Speaker of Senate Hon Bernard Makuza as guest of Honor. Other dignitaries included the Minister of Local Government, Hon Francis Kaboneka, Minister of Sports and Culture, Hon Uwacu Julienne, Defence Minister, Hon Gen James Kabarebe, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Patrick Nyamvumba and chairman of the Chancellery for Heroes, National Orders and Decorations of Honour, Dr. Pierre Damien Habumuremyi among others.
