A delegation of senior military officers from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) led by Gen Patrick NYAMVUMBA, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) arrived in Central Africa Republic for a two-day visit to RDF contingents under MINUSCA in Bangui and Bria on 6 May 2018.
Rwanda Defence Force Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Patrick Nyamvumba held high level meetings with CAR President HE Faustin-Archange Touadéra, Minister of Defence Marie Noelle Koyara and Chief of Defence Staff FACA (CAR Armed Forces) Brig Gen Ludovic Ngaifei.
During their discussion at Presidential Palace in Bangui, the Head of State commended the Government of Rwanda and her leadership for sending peacekeepers to help the People of Central African Republic. He also thanked the RDF Chief of Defence Staff for his visit to Central African Republic; the commitment and discipline of Rwandan Peacekeepers under MINUSCA towards restoring peace and security in CAR which is “highly appreciated by the People of the Central African Republic”, the President said after promising full support and cooperation to Rwandan contingents under MINUSCA.
At MINUSCA headquarters, the RDF delegation was welcomed by the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG), Mr Parfait Onanga Anyanga together with Brig Gen Daniel Sadiki TRAORE, the MINUSCA Deputy Force Commander and Brig Gen Ngaifei LUDOVIC Chef d’Etat Major des Armées Centrafricaines.
During the bilateral meeting, the SRSG Mr Parfait Onanga Anyanga briefed the Rwandan delegation on the country’s political and security situation in general and challenges caused by the armed groups operating in Central African Republic. The SRSG also expressed gratitude to the Government of Rwanda and the continued commitment of Rwandan Contingents towards helping CAR restore peace and order through MINUSCA. He appreciated the recent reinforcement of MINUSCA by a Rwandan Intantry Battle Group.
The RDF CDS noted that his visit expresses the good cordial relations between UN, MINUSCA and Rwanda; “We are committed to restore peace and security in CAR and in that regard, we have just arrived with the Infantry Battle Group to reinforce MINUSCA’s capability”, General Nyamvumba told MINUSCA officials.
The CDS later in the afternoon met Rwandan MINUSCA Peacekeepers (Military and Police) deployed in the capital Bangui and appreciated their efforts and commitment to protect civilians in the CAR. He reminded them to continue upholding Rwandan values and behave as Rwandan ambassadors while fulfilling their task and maintaining high level of discipline.
On Monday, 7 May 2018, the CDS visited the Rwandan Military Level 2 hospital, a well-equipped and staffed medical facility, based in Bria, that provides general surgery, internal medicine, anesthesia and radiology, etc to all MINUSCA personnel and locals in the Eastern Sector of the CAR.
Rwanda Defence Force Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Patrick Nyamvumba and his delegation concluded the visit in the CAR in the morning of 8 May 2018.
Currently, RDF maintains three Units (One Infantry Battalion, a Mechanised Infantry Battle Group and a Level Two Hospital) totaling 1418 peacekeepers in CAR.
